recover erased + formatted external harddrive
accidentally formatted external hard drive from default to apfs, the original contained photos and videos, is there any way i can recover those photos?

If you did not have a backup of that external drive, then those files are definitely gone if the external drive is an SSD. If the external drive is an actual hard drive as opposed to an SSD, then you can try using a data recovery app such as Data Rescue to attempt to recover the files. You will need another large enough drive to store any recovered files since you cannot put them onto the drive you are searching.
FYI, you should always have frequent and regular backups of your computer and all external media which contains important and unique data.
