Gray overlay on iPhone screen

Hi Guys

Got a new iPhone 13 pro on Xmas Eve, and the screen has a gray overlay across the bottom 90% of the screen. You can see it starts half way down the title bar, and is the same on every app. Tried everything I can think of - there are no accessibility settings in use, nothing on the screen, it is unaffected by light/dark mode and has survived a hard reset and a factory reset. Anyone seen this before? Is this a hardware fault?

I did a manual factory reset and the gray was gone, but as I started adding apps it reappeared. I first saw it with a banking app, which I deleted and the gray vanished with it, but as I added other apps it came back again. There are things I have to have on the phone and can’t remove so can’t eliminate everything, but I think WhatsApp and the Microsoft Authenticator might also do this. It looks like some mismatch between some software and either the iPhone itself, or maybe OS 15.2?

if I hard reset the phone it restarts with no gray, but it soon reappears after a few minutes - I’m guessing this is apps running in the background.

I’m hoping this is a software bug and will get resolved before too long, but if that’s the case you would have though a lot more people would be reporting it?

Hello Fareye,

It looks like you're experiencing an issue with the display on your new iPhone. We'd like to help you with a solution to this.

When you factory reset your iPhone did you do so via a computer? Also, did you restore it from a backup after you reset it, or did you set it up as new? Typically a restore like this would be the last resort to resolve an issue like this. If you haven't already try restoring it using the steps here: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings. Set your iPhone up as new instead of restoring from a backup so you can test the phone with nothing on it.

If you continue to experience the same thing after restoring it would be best to have your iPhone inspected to see if it needs to be serviced. Here's information on that: iPhone Repair and Service. You can also contact Apple Support to discuss your options with them as well: Get Support.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care.
