airportd is the AirPort daemon; a process running the macOS software used to access Wi-Fi networks for macOS.
The older name that Apple used for wireless networking products is ”AirPort”, and that name was used for Wi-Fi and Wireless networking hardware embedded within Macs, and also used for Wi-Fi routers and related products.
