It has an ADC for converting the audio output into lightning again (the typical lightning to 3.5mm female adapter converts the digital lightning connection into analogue audio). You can also use this with a lightning to 3.5mm adapter to get higher quality audio than a wireless connection with Apple devices. Hope this helps.
