Your Magic Keyboard for iPad is powered by your iPad. Key backlighting, if enabled, will also increase battery utilisation.

If your battery life is significantly increased, you may be best advised to have your iPad and Magic Keyboard assessed and tested at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store:
