Hi koa39,
We understand you're running into some problems connecting to the internet, and we want to help. To clarify, were you trying to make changes in macOS, or to the router itself? Does the MacBook Pro currently show that it's connected to your Wi-Fi network? This will help us better isolate the problem and determine our next steps. The articles below may help as well:
If your Mac doesn't connect to the Internet over Wi-Fi
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
Please let us know what you find, and we'll take it from there.
Cheers.

I was attempting to change settings on both os and router. Using the "command r" feature was able to download new copy of Monterey which restored internet service although with low security code WEP. I will try to change settings later on router to higher security settings. The router is an older Actiontec Ml424-wr rev c.
you can set it to WPA or WPA2 mode using the "advanced security' pane:
DON'T hide your SSID, it make using your network more difficult and does not protect you in the slightest.
