Pro Display XDR ports on the back randomly stops working while connected to MacBook

As stated in the question, the ports on the back stops working randomly after it is connected to MacBook, does not matter what MacBook it is connected to, Apple silicon or Intel chip shows the same behaviour. It happens all of sudden.

The reason I notice is that I have a keyboard and mouse receiver plugged in the back of the monitor and when it stops working, all of them stop responding. Has anyone experienced this before and was there any solution to it?

I have the same problem. I have a keyboard, mouse, and webcam connected to each of the ports, and it randomly stops working. It seems pretty clear that this issue cuts off the data transfer but not the power.

As an example, I was on google meet with my webcam turned on. Suddenly my camera stopped, but the 'camera on' indicator on the webcam was still lit up. Additionally, my keyboard, which was connected to the display with USB cable, was charging, but did not transfer any inputs.

The fix to this problem is to turn off the display and then turn it back on (whether by cutting off the power or disconnecting the thunderbolt cable to mac). This has been such a hassle since this occurs multiple times a day.

I am actually very surprised you raised this issue. I thought I was a one-off with bad hardware, because I talked with a few 'experts' at Apple Support, and they had no clue. They suspected that the thunderbolt cable could be an issue and sent me a new one, but didn't help. They then suggested that I bring my monitor to the apple store, but I haven't yet because it's a hassle.

I hope they take this seriously and address the issue given that it's a $5000 monitor.

Haven't switched cables, but switched to a different Thunderbolt port on my machine.

Yet, when I experience the issue these days I simply unplug the Thunderbolt cable from my laptop, wait a second or two, and re-insert. It seems to go back to sleep twice afterwards, yet can otherwise continue working.

I am experiencing it more often when I have a Youtube clip running in Safari, yet it also happens every so often in a video-conference call.

I have this exact same issue.

For years I've been using my pro display XDR powering MOTU M2 audio interface, with a logitech unifying receiver and with a lightning cable to charge peripherals with no issue, all connected to my MacBook.

Recently I added the logitech bolt and logitech light-speed to try out their MX mechanical and g502x mouse, and that's when the issues started, cursor freezes, sounds stops, computer still works with Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad during this time, but no sound.

My guess is that it's a hardware issue where the peripherals are trying to draw too much power. It's very irritating though as I have to unplug the thunderbolt cable and plug it back in, and the Logitech ghub software then resets itself.

Hi guys,

Not sure if this could be the fix for this issue, I've tried MBP 14 and MBP 16 with 2 Display XDRs, this issue happens all the time.

BUT - after switching to M1 Mac Mini, it looks like it doesn't happen for a while. I am highly suspecting if the power supply and the data transaction won't work along with each other, because Mac Mini has its own power supply.

As a Mac lover who was tortured by this for almost a year, hope you will solve the issue as well.

I use M1 MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) with all options maxed out and it happens to me every day with two different Pro Display XDR displays (home and office). Both monitors use different USB hubs and keyboards and mice. Basically all USB devices stop working and i have to reconnect thunderbolt cable (the original cable that comes with the monitor) between laptop and monitor, sometimes every 30 minutes.

I have the similar issue but become more serious recently.

I've owned XDR display under 2 years now and I have been using it as extended monitor with my 2019 MBP and have been satisfied without issue until last week. The thunderbolt usb-c connectivity to my MBP start intermittently dropping (charging/discharging alternatively) and the display cannot be turned on successfully.

I've tried numerous attempts and troubleshooting myself, still cannot resolve the issue.

Here are the attempts.

1. Replaced thunderbolt usb-c cable, issue still reproducible .

2. Connected to other MBPs (M1, 2019), issue still reproducible.

3. Can connect to iPad, iMac successfully with display on, no issue observed.

4. Reset MBP SMC, issue still reproducible.

5. unplug power cord and wait 30 secs, issue still reproducible.

6. Tried different power outlet, issue still reproducible.

7. Checked display firmware and thunderbolt firmware, all looks fine and up to date .

I bring my monitor to Apple retail store Genius bar for them to look into it. I end up very disappointed, because they say they are not able to troubleshoot the issue due to not much use cases for them to start with. Instead, they quote me out-of-warranty replacement $2499, and I rejected and walked away.

In the store, I tried to reproduce the issue with the apple person, he can connect to MBA without issue and I also tried my MBP M1, and both can turn on without issue. Now I'm really disappointed, frustrated and clueless about the issue. What is going on with my display !!

Is this hardware issue, firmware issue or software issue, im out of clue. Apple please help

I'm having the exact same thing going on.

Peripherals connected to the screen

  • Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Pro
    • USB-A mouse
    • Audiojack to Bose speakers
  • USB-C to lightning -> connects to my Apple Magic keyboard
  • USB-C Logitech 4K Pro Magnetic Webcam for Apple Pro Display

Randomly my mouse and keyboard stops working and indeed i have to pull out the Thunderbolt cable that is connected to my MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) - M1 Pro.

When I reconnect everything starts working again, but it is really annoying.

What stands out in the replies is that everybody seems to be using Logitech peripherals (in my case the webcam that is connected via USB-C to my screen), so it might be worth to investigate this further (Apple or Logitech).

I will disconnect my webcam and see if it stops occurring.

Kind regards,

Frederik

I have the same issue, I only have a MacPro keyboard and Wacom tablet connected to the back of the XDR display, with main power from the monitor going to my M1 MacBook Pro. About 3 times a day the keyboard and tablet freeze, I have to unplug the power from the monitor to the laptop and plug it back in which resolves the issue. Can anyone from Apple help provide an answer why the XDR display stops providing power periodically? It's very hard to work like this.

Same problem here, also involving a Logitech USB receiver. The receiver is USB-A and is in a USB-A to USB-C adapter. This setup worked for over a year and became intermittent around the time that this thread was started. Specifically, for me it started after updating from Monterey 12.0 to 12.1. It never occurred before that update and started fairly soon afterward. Of course this doesn't 100% imply causality but thought I'd throw that observation into the mix here. If anyone is seeing it before 12.1 that would be of interest, I suppose, as we could start focusing on other culprits.

I was hoping 12.2 would solve this but no luck so far. So, similarly, if anyone is on the 12.3 beta and is still seeing this, I'd also value a report on that front.

Same problem (macOS 12.4), and I was about to write that without my Logitech Bolt receiver it was stable (Logitech MX Master 3s connected via Bluetooth). Yet, during writing the USB-inputs again froze.

Switching the cable to a different Thunderbolt 3 on my 16-inch M1 MBP did work, but since there are only three TB3 ports on that machine, I need to restart after three freezes.
