Restore from Backup of iPhone:

Restore your iPhone from Backup containing these messages. If not backed up through iCloud, then it would have been your computer.

They are gone.

By "messages" are you referring to:

1. eMail messages?
2. iMessages?
3. SMS text messages?

How you might be able to recover deleted ones will be different for each.

Or, they mean they don't have a backup at all.
