What is the > symbol on my iPhone and how do I turn it off?

The latest update placed it on the screen and when touched a bar appears. If you touch the finger up it reads the text on the page.

Banners:

That is a banner. So, disable banners. by performing the following...

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: Mail
  3. Tap: Notifications
  4. Tap: The Checkmark below "Banners" (so that there is no checkmark)

Screenshot: Uncheck where it is highlighted in red...
