screen mirroring

I used screen mirroring from my iPad or Mac to view photos or watch Apple TV. When I found this to be a bit unwieldy (a phone call would interrupt it for example), I hooked up an Apple TV box. All good for streaming Apple TV, but now none of the devices will mirror or even find the TV. I contacted support and they said my Sony was not compatible for screen mirroring, totally ignoring the fact that it was perfectly fine prior to hooking up the little box. So, they essentially told me to get a new TV......

If you have an Apple TV box connected to your TV, that Apple TV box is the receiving device for AirPlay screen mirroring, so that the TV doesn’t have to support it natively.

The Sony XBR-65X750D has Chromecast built-in, which is a different (competing) protocol than Apple AirPlay screen mirroring. Some select apps may have support for Chromecast (now officially named Google Cast), even on iPhone and iPad. Not Apple’s own apps, though.

Some streaming services may block AirPlay screen mirroring, or require a later model Apple TV for AirPlay screen mirroring.

E.g. Disney+ requires an Apple TV (3rd generation or later) for AirPlay functionality.

E.g. Netflix doesn’t allow AirPlay at all since April 2019.

Uh, so you say my Betamax won't play on my VHS..... Geez, that's kinda where I started, but as I once said, I disconnected my Apple TV box and it still won't mirror from my iPad, iMac or iPhone from iPhotos or iTunes like it would before I hooked up that cheap little box.... Sad.... Two hours on the phone and now 2/3 messages... I don't want to buy a new TV or new devices, but you are saying c'lest vie.

In retracing steps, the only thing I will add is that when I originally plugged the HDMI cable from the Apple TV box to the receiver linked to the TV and sound system, I did not log in to Apple TV. It was available on the box, of course, but I didn't log in since I was able to stream Apple TV shows from the iPad or iMac through that input to the TV by mirroring So at that point, I was able to show my iPhoto slide shows via the same mirroring. But, I found streaming was not the most convenient way to watch TV so I went ahead and logged in on the connected Apple box to TV*. After that, my TV disappeared from mirroring on my other devices, and, even after I disconnected the box, nothing changed: no mirroring.

As a side point, the Apple TV box seems to have access to all my iTunes library, but it only has a partial collection of my iPhotos, including none of my Photo Albums (and it is very slow at pulling up even this limited collection of photos). The photo options on the iMac and on the iPad are faster and much more extensive; thus, my interest in being able to mirror.

I appreciate the help. Thank you.
