Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

A Mac cannot get a virus, and this would not be a sign of one. However, Mac computers can get malware. To see if you have any, run a scan with Malwarebytes for Mac (free).

To free up space, please see: Free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support. If "System" still uses a large amount of storage, Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support, login, and restart into normal mode and test.
