Apps are staying in dock after opened

Since the upgrade to Monterey some apps I use, ie: Preview, System Preferences are staying in the dock. Why and how can I stop this? Anyone else?

Apps are staying on the doc all answers to this are old, and don't solve the issue. every time I close an app, the icon stays on the dock and I have to right click>remove to make it go away. How do I prevent these apps from staying in the doc? this just started happening when I got a new macbook air, running monterey. It did not happen on my old macbook. I can choose "keep in dock" for the important ones but what's they point if they all just stay there anyways after opening???

Preview icon stays in dock after being closed Haven't seen my exact issue posted. The preview icon stays in dock after closing the window. I have to then click on the icon and press 'quit' to get it out of the dock. In System Preferences>Dock & Menu Bar> I've already unchecked 'Show recent applications in Dock' This happens with other apps occasionally too, but it's most annoying with the Preview window. I want it set up so when I close a window it fully closes, and only the apps or settings I ask to stay in the dock stay there. Help? Thank you.

go into System Preferences > Dock & Menubar and remove the checkmark for "Show recent applications in Dock"
