How to dispose old external hard drives?

I have 3 old EHD’s that I would like to get rid of. What’s the easiest way to make sure my data on them can’t be accessed? Is my only option to take them apart?

iMac, OS X 10.11

Erase them using Disk Utility.

Then if you are still worried? Put on your safety glasses, gloves and smash them with a hammer.

Bash them with a hammer or put them in an enclosure such as https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/external-drives/owc-drive-dock and then format them to whatever format you want and you are done. Then take them to your local computer recycling center (Best Buy in the USA) and they will recycle for you.
