If purchased directly from Apple, you have a generous 14-day period within which to return an unwanted device for exchange or refund. This period may sometimes be extended, to a specific date, to accommodate items purchased during a holiday period - such as Christmas/New Year.
Your purchase receipt from Apple will include the latest date that an item can be returned. Upon expiry, unless you have additional statutory rights of return that apply in your region/country, the opportunity to exchange or refund is lost.
If you received the gift from somebody else, you will need to enlist their help - as only they, as the purchaser, will have the necessary documentation.
