HomePod Mini always says “paused” in Home app

I just installed two new HomePod minis and both continually say “paused“ in the Home app (not related to playing music). See attached. When I long tap the devices, settings are accessible but features like the timers continually give me a spinning wheel and never load.

I’ve already reset them once and that did not resolve the problem. I also restarted both cable modem and router, tried on both a 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz network (also making sure my iPhone is on the same network when accessing the device), tried wiping out the Home app… Nothing works. It’s also worth it one of these is sitting less than a foot away from the Wi-Fi router.

Any ideas? It’s been so frustrating setting these things up. Lots of frustrating little HomePod Mini annoyances when Alexa was so easy to set up… but I’m hoping to get rid of Alexa because of all the unwanted suggestions Amazon keeps spitting out. (No, they’re not advertisements, so there’s no way to shut them off without shutting off other Alexa features.)

All mine say paused if I stopped music playback on them. This does not affect how I use them though . If you left music on them see if tapping the icon resumes play (icon will turn white)

Oh this is interesting, I thought the "paused" status was the overall device. Part of the device settings aren't loading (the timer area just gives me a spinning wheel) so I figured it was a connection problem. So all devices will say "paused" if they're not actively playing music?

Update: I just tested it by playing music and then viewing the icon in the app and... you are indeed correct. Mystery solved, thanks for your help.
