If your old Mac is fully functional and the trade in value is disappointing, one thing to consider is keep it for backup hardware. Just like software backups we are used to keeping to preserver user data...

If a working computer is mission critical to your work flow, having an old computer as backup hardware to carry on with daily task (after all you have already paid it off.)...if you encounter a hardware issue on a new purchase could be a life saver.
