Comparing spec of new MacBook to my late 2014 iMac retina

I’m considering replacing my iMac 5k with the new M1 MacBook Pro 16”. I want to keep costs down so was opting for the cheapest model. I’m pretty clueless when comparing the specs of the two, so my question is:

How would the lowest specced 16” MacBook Pro compare to my iMac in terms of performance i.e. will the processor, graphics card be more powerful? I’ll be mostly using the machine for Photoshop, creating reasonably large layered artworks.

Here are the specs of my IMac:

And here’s the specs for the MacBook Pro:

Any advice on how the power of the new machine would compare to the power of my iMac would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

The newest machine can run rings around the iMac you have now, BUT:

Do you really need the mobility and battery of a MacBook Pro? You pay dearly for that mobility, and if you are not editing Videos while at the beach, you paid for things you will never really need.

The 24-in iMac is M1-powered now, and the 27-in is likely to follow sometime soon (no one here knows exactly when).

Hi, thanks so much for the info on performance and yes, fair point, I have been wrestling with whether moving to a laptop is a smart move. I occasionally work away from home so might be worthwhile.

I didn’t realise the current 27” iMac doesn’t yet have the M1 chip so also useful info!

many thanks,

ben
