Magic keyboard comes with a USB type C charging cable. Can I use a USB type A cable for charging?

The magic keyboard that I have came with a USB type C charging cable. Don't have enough TB ports on my mac mini, so I'd like to use a USB type A charging cable and my USB 3.0 powered hub to charge the magic keyboard. I get tired of having to unplug a TB3 port on my mac mini to charge the magic keyboard. I could also leave the magic keyboard plugged into the powered USB hub all the time so I wouldn't have to think about charging.

Will this work? Would like to know before I spend $30 on a cable to try it :-).

I leave mine plugged in all the time through a hub and no issues. If you want to use a USB3 port then just get a USB-A to USB-C adapter. FYI the keyboard will stay charged for several weeks before it needs to be recharged. You can always just unplug at the keyboard if you want to between charges.

I don't have any issues using the USB-A charging port on my Sabrent hub or using the keyboard while plugged into the charging port. It does seem to take a bit longer to charge that way though. It does seem to charge a bit faster using my MacBook Air 30W charger and using my iPhone 11 Pro charger is somewhere between the to for charge time.

It’ll likely charge faster and work better if directly connected. It’s worth pointing out that the Magic keyboard switches between wired and wireless automatically. A hub may mess with that too.

I’d use the hub for non-Apple stuff. That said, why not try it out? You can return the cable if it doesn’t work to your satisfaction.
