I purchased an external DVD player, off brand name and when I hook it up to my new MacBook Air the screen opens up but it stays black and I can hear the DVD playing. Does anyone know if there is a setting I need to change to get it to work? I've looked all over the apple help and it hasn't worked.

Return it for an Apple USB SuperDrive - Apple. If you have a Thunderbolt 3/USB-C based Mac, you'll also need a USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple.

Yes, you need to update to the latest level. I believe it was 11.6.1 or update to Monterey even better.
Click on the Apple logo (upper left in menu), then about this Mac and see what it says.

Got my USB SuperDrive at a Goodwill, unopened for 5 bucks. Maybe you can too?
Are you using Big Sur or Monterey. There was an issue with Big Sur 11.6 and the DVD app not recognizing the disc.

Thanks...I got this new it's this year's I believe so I thought I was at the top level? I also get auto updates and have not for this?
