Photo Import Method - Live Photos Issues/Naming

Hello,

I haven't seen this topic covered very much, but perhaps my scenario is slightly extreme.

I'm using an iPhone 7, currently on iOS12. I'm wanting to update it to iOS15 now and realized I hadn't backed up my photos to my Windows PC for a couple of years (I'm not using iCloud). The number of photos/videos was around 15000 total. Because I almost always take live photos, that's around 25000 individual files. I'm using the windows built in 'Import Photos/Videos" tool. There are options for how to name the imported files. First I tried to just keeping the original file names, thinking this would ensure that the JPG/MOV (or HEIC/MOV) pairs that form each live photo would maintain the same name. Unfortunately, because I have more that 9999 photos/videos, numbers got reused in different folders in the iPhone storage. This lead to cases where I might have IMG_0540.jpg, IMG_0540 (1).jpg, IMG_0540.mov, IMG_0540 (1).mov. And in a lot of these cases, the image from IMG_0540.jpg went with the videos from IMG_0540 (1).mov and visa versa. So the file names are not matched.

Not wanting to sort this out manually, I attempted a new import. This time, I went for "date + name" for the naming. This seems to have worked mostly perfectly for the JPG/MOV pairs earlier in my collection (apart from some weird cases where the MOV date is one day later than the JPG date), but for the HEIC/MOV pairs, it is all wrong. The HEIC files and MOV files are given sequential numbers instead so the filenames don't match at all.

At this point I'm yet considering another several hour import but I was wondering what options other people are using. The next obvious choice seems to be "original names (maintain folders)"

I have a home NAS so not really planning to go down the iCloud route. Hoping to get nextcloud running but that's a separate topic.

I'd be really interested to hear how everyone else ensures the link between their photo/video pairs that form each live photo. Thanks.

I would recommend you to take a backup on your Windows PC using iTunes. You no longer have to worry about how to transfer the Live Photos. Import action may transfer Live Photos to your Windows PC as a still image.

How to backup with your computer

  1. Connect your device to your computer. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15, open Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes.
  2. If a message asks for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the onscreen steps. If you forgot your passcode, get help.
  3. Locate your device on your computer. If your device doesn't appear on your computer, learn what to do.
  4. If you want to save Health and Activity data from your device or Apple Watch, you need to encrypt your backup: Select the box called Encrypt [device] backup and create a memorable password. If you don't need to save your Health and Activity data, you can make a backup that isn't encrypted. Just click Back Up Now.
  5. Write down your password and store it somewhere safe, because there's no way to recover your iTunes backups without this password.
  6. When the process ends, you can see if the backup finished successfully.
