I don't think there is a way to turn it off. Leave it plugged in and idle so it can complete.
How large is the drive? It shouldn't take more than overnight for standard size laptop drives. Even a 1TB should complete overnight.
You can erase the drive and reinstall the OS if you are planning on Migrating from a Time Machine backup.
