Apple Pay passcode

I am trying to use Apple Pay online with MacBook with touch ID. The Apple Pay prompt asks for a passcode, and I have no idea what passcode it is looking for. I always used Apple Pay with Touch ID. How do I figure out what passcode it wants?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.6

If the Touch ID isn't working, use your device password on your Mac.

There is nothing wrong with my Touch ID, but Apple Pay asked for the passcode instead.

Using the device password did not work, but oddly, after that failure, it allowed me to use Touch ID, and that worked. Go figure.
