The Screenshot App freezes and dims part of my screen

The Screenshot App freezes and dims part of my screen every time i try to record. The screen dims as it should around the selected window that I want to record, but then the recording controls vanish, and I cannot interact with the app at all. the parts of the screen that dimmed stay that way until I reboot. Force-quit does not show that the Screenshot app is open, and relaunching Finder has no effect. I have to restart to get rid of it.

This issue has persisted through multiple OS upgrades. I'm currently on Monterey version 12.0.1

MacBook Pro (2020 and later)
