How do I know if an Apple Pencil will connect to my iPad? I have a version A1709.

iPad Pro 10.5-inch, Wi-Fi

That iPad model will only work with the first generation pencils. Click here for the complete compatibility list.

Your year and model iPad is a 2017, 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro.

That iPad Pro model uses the original, 1st gen Pencil with the silver, chrome, metal-ised top band and protective, magnetic Apple Lightning connector top cap.
