I use the headphone jack for my external speakers, and they work well...until the iMac wakes up ...then it reverts to the internal speakers, and the only way I've found to get the headphone jack to recognize my external speakers is to restart the computer...which is not ideal...
anyone hear of this before?? Weird! Any help is appreciated

First try resetting the iMac's NVRAM, as per > https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
The only other time I've heard that, was from some type of flaky or incompatible third party audio software.
thanks for your input den.thed...as far as I can tell, there are no third party audio apps involved here, it's just the stock Catalina audio software...I'll have to try your recommendation in the morning...

I'm currently running Catalina...perhaps if I were to upgrade to Big Sur...or Monterey?...
this is so weird...I just switched from a 2011 21.5" iMac running Sierra, and I never had a lick of trouble with that computer, which is why this is such a head scratcher
