AirTag in checked luggage/Airline, airport policy.

My AirTag helped me track my bag on the “to” leg of a trip. It also did on the “fro” leg of the trip. It was however removed from my bag when I arrived back at my city’s airport (after the fro leg), before I picked the bag up. Does anyone know why the AirTag may have been removed?
