AirPlay from iPad to MacBook stops working

Hi!


I use the new Monterey capability to AirPlay music from my iPad's local library to a MacBook.

This is a great feature, but at some point, sound always stops working. The following happens:

  1. iPad and MacBook are connected via AirPlay and everything works fine.
  2. After a playlist is finished and nothing happens for a while, the devices are disconnected automatically.
  3. When I choose the MacBook as AirPlay target again, the connection is reestablished, I even get the song title and pause button in the control panel, but no audio is playing.

Note that I am even able to pause, skip and skim through the current track on the MacBook which is received by the iPad. It is just the sound, which is missing.


The devices are:

iPad 6. Generation with iPadOS 15.1

MacBook Air M1 (2020) with macOS Monterey 12.1

Thanks for reaching out through the Apple Support Communities about not getting any audio after re-establishing the AirPlay connection between your iPad and MacBook Air.


Have you had the opportunity to restart both your iPad and MacBook Air since you noticed this behavior?


Restart your iPad


Shut down or restart your Mac


Are you experiencing this behavior with any other apps?


Additionally, does that still persist after updating your iPad to iPadOS 15.2?

 Update iPadOS


Hopefully those details will help to isolate this behavior further.

Yes I forgot to mention this. When I restart the MacBook, AirPlay is working fine again for the moment (so starting at 1. again). When the connection is lost after some timeout the same problem occurs. This only happens when the devices disconnect by themselves (e.g. when the MacBook goes to sleep, I think). When I manually switch the audio target on the iPad from the MacBook to another AirPlay device and then back to the MacBook, it keeps working as expected.


I updated to iPadOS 15.2 but this did not solve the issue. Also restarting the iPad has not the same effect as rebooting the MacBook.


This does not affect the iPad Apple Music app exclusively (tried it with the Amazon Music app, same problem).
