Is there any reason you would have to back up your ipad when you upgrade to a new iphone?

If replacing your existing iPhone with a new device, you would be well advised to ensure that you have a backup of your iPhone.

As you are not replacing your iPad, you should not have specific reason to backup the iPad because of your iPhone upgrade - other than keeping a recent backup of all your devices as part of best practice and good data management.
