Apple Watch Update and Pairing

I haven’t used my Apple Watch in a while and I go to pair it with my phone again because it seems to have gotten unpaired in the amount of time the battery was dead and it was powered off. It said that I’d have to update the watch before pairing and when I try to do so it says I can’t because I’m not connected to internet, but I’ve checked and my phone is definitely connected to the wifi. I’m not sure if it means I’m meant to connect my watch to wifi, but if it does I can’t do that because the watch isn’t paired and won’t turn on normally.
