I have some 24/96 files in iTunes that I want to listen too in full 24/96. My understanding it that I need to go into Finder>Applications>Utilities>Audio MIDI Set Up and under Output change the Format from 44.1 Hz to 96 Hz and also change it from 2 channel-16 bit to 2 channel-24 bit.

My understanding is that I must make this change manually and that iTunes will not automatically switch to 24/96 is that correct? What happens to the 24/96 file if the setting is left at 16/44? Is it "downsampled"? What if I leave the Output in the 24/96 mode? Is there any negative impact on playing 16/44 files back. Are the "re-processed" or something?

I guess I am wondering if I have to change this back and forth each time I want to listen to the different types of files?
