Hello, im running a brand new imac 24" monterey m1 computer. Im trying to stop the embedding of attachments into the email body. i've tried the "defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool YES" input into terminal, after quitting mail app. Yet it does not work. Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Morning Michael, thanks for the reply. Do you know of a permanent solution for this, as oppose to the method you suggested. It's a burden to repeat this process on every email.

Hi Romes242,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help with attachments in the Mail app for Mac. It sounds like you don't want them embedded.

Please see this page of the larger Mac Mail User Guide: Add attachments to emails in Mail on Mac and note:

"You can change how attachments are displayed in the Compose window (this doesn’t determine how attachments are shown for your recipients). To display an attachment (such as a one-page PDF document or an image) as an icon, Control-click the attachment in your message, then choose View as Icon. To show the attachment again, Control-click it, then choose View in Place."

Have a fantastic day!

Apple Mail embeds attachments. Have you opened the attachments panel via the compose panel's paperclip tool item, and set the options to:

You have zero control over how non-Apple Mail applications process attachments or even the content of the sent message, so attempting or requesting how Apple Mail handles attachments would be futile.
