Hi 62skidoo,

To reset your Mac login password and unlock your user account, please see this article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212190

Thanks for that info. Your Apple ID is not locked, but your Mac user account is locked. Those two accounts are different from each other:

  • Your Mac user account is the account you use to access and use your Mac. The password on it is comparable to a device passcode.

  • Your Apple ID is the account you use to access Apple online services, such as iCloud, iMessage, and FaceTime.

Did you try starting up in macOS Recovery, as suggested by the article I linked earlier?

I have progressed to a screen with the connection info on the upper right, fortune cookie, my name, “enter password” and “ your account is locked” in the middle, and “shutdown restart and sleep “ buttons in bottom middle. Also get a full magenta screen occasionally (the new screen of death?).

it’s obvious my account is not locked - this is being written on my iPad Air.
