MacBook Pro 16" 2021 high memory usage when on Facebook

Im experiencing that my brand new MacBook Pro 16" 2021 base model 16 gb ram, is using maximum of memory after about 45 minutes of Facebook videos "Watch", I already returned the first Macbook I bought because of the problem, but im also experiencing it on this new Macbook.

I have the latest version of Monterey 12.1, and haven't downloaded any other software than what the MacBook came with, and also no plugins downloaded in Safari. I have tried to surf Facebook in private mode in Safari but with the same result.

Can anyone please test if this also is happening on their new Macbook when watching videos in Watch on Facebook.

Hope to hear something from someone.

Best regards

Dennis

Hello applefanfromdenmark,

As you mentioned comparing this to the behavior on a Windows laptop, we aren't able to speak to this as it's an entirely different computer with a different operating system.

Moving forward, you did mention two things we'd like to address:

  1. The first thing would be the 'freezing' you mentioned. What exactly is becoming unresponsive?
  2. You also mentioned it's using the maximum amount of the built-in memory(RAM). If you're seeing this occur with the built-in Activity Monitor app, what shows at the top as using the most memory, and does it actually show it's using '16GB' of your RAM?
  3. Please also let us know what shows at the top of Activity Monitor as using the most CPU, along with the amount it's using.

Cheers!

Hey there applefanfromdenmark,

We'd like to team up with you and help by taking a closer look with you.

To start, we'd like to preface with explaining that Facebook does have lots of things happening(videos, streaming, photos, constantly updating, etc.), so it's natural to see more memory being used.

That being said, what leads you to believe it's using more than what's required? The more details you provide, the better equipped we'll be to assist. Take care!

Hi bruno75,

Well I don't have anything to match it up against, but within a few days, I am able to test it with an old Windows laptop, to see if its the same problem.

But even though that Facebook have a lot of things happening, it seems a bit overkill that my MacBook should use maximum of ram, and then freeze ? Couldn't I be some kind of bug, within the clearing of buffers in safari ?

Best regards
