System preferences not accepting my password

Hi can someone help me work out how to get system preferences to accept my password.

I thought maybe I had got my password wrong so have changed it, signed out and back in again on all devices and restarted my laptop. It is still refusing to recognise password and allow me to change date/time or anything else that is locked in system preferences.

I have no software updates available (current OS 10.13.06).

I have not used a blank password.

I have tried restarting my MacBook multiple times.

Grateful to resolve this if anyone can help.

Thanks

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.13
