Can I change the background color of a document in Preview?

Can I change the color of a document I'm reading in Preview? -- Not the app's background. For example, if I'm reading a book, I'd like to have the black text against a light yellow background, instead of black on white.

Does anyone have suggestions for apps that would allow me to do that (other than Adobe). I am aware that Adobe has this option under "Accessibility".

Preview does not have a feature to alter the text and background in a PDF. There are no included applications in macOS that can do this either.

It might be possible programmatically by reading a PDF page by page using Apple's PDFKit Framework and obtaining the existing attributedString content of the page content. One then adds a different foreground and background color to that attributedString content of the individual pages and writes the pages' dataRepresentation back to the PDF. Haven't tried this to confirm it will work.
