IPHONE/MAC IN SYNC?

Hello. If I take my laptop with me to school, or anywhere for that matter, and have imessage set up, if I was to leave my phone at my home of residence, would I still be able to send and receive texts on my macbook if I was connected to wifi?

I can text on my macbook with my phone next to me when I am doing assignments, however, I need to know if I can send and receive them if my phone is left in my car or at home and I am elsewhere
