Hi, I just tried to open iPhoto and couldn't get to my photos, nothing there. I also tried the other 'photos' app again nothing there. Feeling anxious as all my photos for the past few years were saved in these apps. There is a white no entry symbol on the app. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong and how I can get my photos back?

Appreciate any help or suggestions

Thanks

Launch Photos with the option key held down. From the dialog choose your iPhoto library. Photos will create a new Photos Library from your iPhoto media.

If you had a Photos Library, you should be able to find it with the same procedure, though you don't need to create a new library.

The iPhoto icon is crossed out, because there have been no updates to iPhoto since 2015, when Apple stopped the development and replaced it by Photos. The last version of iPhoto needs old iLife frameworks, that contain 32 bit code and cannot run on macOS 10.15 or later. They are no longer installed on the system.

Keith told you, how you can migrate iPhoto Libraries to Photos. If your iPhoto libraries are on an external volume, just make sure, the volume is compatible with Photos. The file System format should be MacOS Extended or APFS and the drive should not have been used for Time Machine.
