Hi Rob, I mentioned my Safari is version 15.2, since my question is about Safari, not my iOS (although that is the OS of my iPad).
I read the page, however it offered no solution, but only reiterates what's on the Safari preferences page. And there is nothing there that addresses how to click a link to open, so that it opens in a new tab, not replaces the one I'm in. I realize that I can of course, control click the link and select whether it opens as a new tab or window, but up until recently ( I assume the last update), tabs would ALWAYS open as a new tab, and not replace the one I'm in, and this has been true for nearly 30 years. Why would it just now be different? It's really messing me up, as I don't expect to lose the page I'm on, when clicking a link.
Conversely, there are websites when I would like it to replace the page I'm on, instead of it launching a new tab or window. I guess it would be nice to have one or the other be the default, but when sometimes it opens in a new tab, sometimes in a new window, or sometimes it replaces the page I'm on, it makes navigation pretty confusing. It would seem that according to this preference page, that unless I command or control click a link, it will open in the page, but often it doesn't, so how are we to know one way or the other?
Also the option as to "Tab layout" on the top of the preference page isn't very helpful, as it's not very clear what "Compact" looks like, since the image is so tiny. Why must all the preference pages and other Apple windows be stuck using tiny fonts, without the ability to make them any larger, unless we want to change the resolution of our display, which would affect everything? This is so infuriating, as we should be able to enlarge the font, especially with a 27" screen, instead of having microscopic font & even information windows.
