Instructions are right here. If you don't know your username/password (I've seen it where someone had it set up by someone else and forgot all the particulars) then you'll need to find that out before proceeding.
Add an email account to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
But if that has issues, you might try using a specific email app depending on your email provider. I know Microsoft and Gmail have apps on the App Store.
