Keyer problem in FCP

The keyer effect leaves a semi-opaque corner in my keyed clip. It corresponds to the brightest area of my green screen. I have tried every control under every triangle in the keyer inspector without reducing it significantly. The green screen is one consistent color, but as stated before, some areas show brighter because of lighting. I filed the clip in 4k on iPhone 13 Pro. Anyone ever seen this before and found a way around it?

terryb  — so not criticizing your help! (And I learned a ton of stuff from Larry Jordan's "webinars" over the years.)

Two things I don't care for in FCPX: 1) the Keyer and 2) Color Board/Correction. Built my own tools that work for me and are much easier to deal with.

BTW - one thing that Larry Jordan's article doesn't go into: you can create multiple Sample Color selections on any given frame of video. Just select Sample Color and hold down the shift key and make selections to "accumulate" more of the backdrop (whatever color it is.) The less you have to use all the "accessory" parameters, the better. I would also recommend using several smaller rectangle selections opposed to a single large selection attempting to get as much as possible.

The Keyer is a complicated subject (and my "levity" failed to levitate... :P ... sorry!)

Thanks terryb. Draw Mask helped me eliminate almost all of the last fragments left behind from Keying. It's weird that a different color was left behind. I didn't have much trouble with video from my old iPhone X, so it's a learning curve to work with HD & 4K video. I hope FCP catches up with these issues. My big takeaway is get better lighting to beginning with. Shout out to Larry Jordan too!

Hi Tom,

The first picture I took with my iPhone to show how it looks on the screen. The second picture is a screen grab from within FCP in composite mode. The third picture is screen grab of matte mode in FCP. I am using the latest FCP 10.6.1 on an M1 MacBook Pro. The project is 4k/3820x2160/ProRes 422 Proxy/Wide Gamut HDR - Rec 20230 HLG. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

LOL fox_m! I was totally levitated by your post and no criticism taken! My reply was meant to be light-hearted, but I must've missed the mark.

To get back to FCP keying, I find it is kind of a black (green? blue?) art, and I'm really glad I don't normally deal with other people's green screen shots. If it's hard to key, it' my own fault. Wish I were smart enough to build my own keying software like you but I did build a small green screen interview stage using LED tube lights in inexpensive, ballast-less enclosures. They're not super bright so I need 8 enclosures totaling 16 lights, but LEDs don't heat up the space. They're not *quite* synced to 60Hz so playing through footage at faster than realtime there is faint, vertically rolling noise, but it's so slow that the FCP keyer doesn't seem to care.
