Location from iPad to Apple Watch

We bought my son an Apple Watch for Christmas. When I check his location, it always shows me the iPad, and not the watch. I’ve followed the instructions, but am unable to change the option for “My location”. How can I update this?

How did you setup your son's watch? Did you use the Watch Family setup? Is you son using the same Apple ID on the iPad and watch?

The iPad says "share my location" ON and "my location" of THIS DEVICE. It can not be changed to Apple Watch. The iPad stays home, while the Apple Watch is out and about. Both devices show up on the devices tab for my child in Find My...but under people it says "no location found"
