How to get Safari open new tabs in a currently open tabs group?

I love the new Safari's tabs groups feature. However when I'm working in a group of tabs different from the default one, and open a link from external application it opens it in a new window in a default tabs group. Which doesn't make sense most of the time (since at the moment I'm working in a different tabs group – perhaps I'd like to open a new tab there).

Is there a way to change this setting?

Hi Vlad1993,

It sounds like you're wondering about opening links in another application and if you can choose which tab group in Safari it opens in. We're glad you've joined us in Apple Support Communities. Let's see if this helps.

Depending on the application, you can hold down the Control button on your keyboard and click on the link, and you may get the option to "Open link in Tab Group." You can then pick that option and then pick the tab group you want the link to open in. You can test out this feature in Safari to see how it works.

If you don't see the option outlined above for the application you're working in, then that app developer does not offer that option. In that case, you'll want to reach out to them for more assistance using the steps in How to contact an app developer

Another alternative is to open the link how it normally opens (in the wrong tab group) and then Control + Click on the tab title itself in Safari. There you will see an option to "Move Tab Group" and then you can move the window to the correct group. You can also drag the tab to the correct group as outlined in the section "Open a tab in another window" in Use tabs for webpages in Safari on Mac

If the issue remains after following those steps, let us know what options you had a chance to try from above.

We hope that helps with your question and take care!

Hi Vlad1993,

While that's not currently an option, we're wondering if a Safari extension could help. A great place to get started is by visiting Get Started With Safari Extensions. You can take a look and see if any of those extensions help with your particular workflow. If you find one that you like, you'll find how to install it in How to install Safari extensions on your Mac.

Best!

Thanks for your advice! I don't find "Open link in Tab Group" option anywhere (including native apps, such as Notes or Viewer) except for the Safari itself. Wondering if any app has it.

Moving "wrongly opened" tabs to a desired tab group manually might work if only I could move few of them at once (not one by one). Have any idea if there is such an option?
