i have to restart migration…

i have a macbook pro 2012 that i just got and want to be my new computer and i have a 2011 mac mini with files that i want to migrate. they’re connected to the same wifi and i started the migration sunday night however there’s been change or update in “time remaining” since monday morning it seems…going to have to restart the migration and i was wondering if there’s a faster or better way to migrate instead of over wifi? can the computers connect via usb? should i use an external hard drive as a time machine backup and migrate via backup?
