Upgrading.

Happy New Year to everyone.

I rely on Microsoft EXCEL spreadsheets to do my personal accounts. At the moment I'm on macOS Mojave and my question is, if I upgrade to a later, or the latest OS, will my Excel app. still work? I know that I should keep updated but I do need the spreadsheets.

Would I have to upgrade the Excel and, if so, will it cost a lot to do so?

Thank you.

That depends on the version of Mac OS you intend to upgrade to and what model year iMac you own. You need a 2015 or later iMac to run Monterey which is the most up-to-date version of Mac OS. Beginning with Big Sur (the version of Mac OS just before Monterey) will only run 64 bit apps. So if you have an older version of Office for Mac that only is 32 bits then the answer is no. If you have 2016 or later Office for Mac then you are fine. The 2016 version of Office must be updated to 64 bit, later versions are native 64 bit apps.

Bottom line, you need to provide more information than you have in order to us to give you a simple yes or no answer.

A 2012 iMac can run up to Catalina 2012 what version of Office for Mac is currently installed on the computer. Catalina requires a 64 bit version too according to Microsoft Office For Mac: Which Version To Buy - Macworld UK.

Personally if I were you I would strongly consider upgrading Office for Mac for several reasons. First, the longer you try to live in the past the more difficulties you will run into as you want to upgrade other apps, OS's and hardware. Next, your iMac is now 10+ years old and you should be considering replacing it which means you will need Big Sur or later. Your internal drive may last another day or another couple of years, you just don't know!
