1. First, are you paired with an Apple Watch. Notifications are different if so: Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

2. If no Apple Watch is paired, next I recommend checking Notifications settings for Messages. Also verify if you enabled Deliver Quietly: Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

"Manage notifications Deliver Quietly: These notifications appear in the Notification Center, but don't show up on the Lock screen, play sounds, or show a banner or badge icon."

3. Please also check if your iPhone is paired to any headphones. If so, the Notification might only sound through there.

4. Re-verify if Do Not Disturb turned on, and it may be necessary to do these steps: Use Do Not Disturb on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

• Turn Do Not Disturb on.
• Restart your iPhone: iPhone User Guide: Restart iPhone - Apple Support
• When it powers back on, go back and turn Do Not Disturb back off.

5. Is Hide alerts enabled for the message thread? Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
