Can I use Time Machine to retrieve deleted messages?

Yes but it is hit and miss since in Time Machine no longer has an Mail entry point like in the past. Thus the email messages are listed by number, not a real "subj". Here is structure. From the date you can more easily find what you want. files with .emix are messages. When in Time Machine you can read the messages. by just clicking on one .emix file.
