On updating our I pads which use the same username too much is being shared and we would like separate I.d. ‘s. How do we separate the two I pads with the same i d at the moment?

For the iPad which you wish to use a new AppleID:
before sell/give away iDevice: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201351
Then create a new AppleID and set that iPad up as a new iPad:

Family sharing may allow you to use apps purchased with the old AppleID
when logged in with the new AppleID
