I can’t figure out how to get subtitles when I watch Apple tv

Using the down arrow while a program is playing works for me for Apple TV via Roku and also works on some other devices.
I believe you need to turn audio description off first -- the following may help with that: Use audio descriptions on Apple TV - Apple Support
Thanks for your help! I found the subtitles using the down button but can’t get them turned on. Somehow I did get the audio (descriptions) turned on and can’t turn them off again.
