Error seems to be related to Storage. Have you tried to use First Aid from Disk Utility?

Hope it helps.

Update or upGrade. The two are very different.

Update as in update Catalina from 10.15.6 to Catalina 10.15.7

upGrade as in Catalina10.15 to Monterey macOS 12 ?

If the later of the two Catalina to Monterey - there are numerous reports of people attempting to Jump Over Big Sur and go directly to Monterey. So have been successful and other have not been successful

Further and important aspect of Monterey as er below

There are reports appearing on the ASC Forums regarding failed installation of Monterey on older Qualifying Apple Computers. In most cases this is related to having a NON Apple Original internal drive ?

The EFI Boot ROM included in Monterey is verifying for Original Apple Drive and if not found , may Balk or fail to upgrade to Monterey.

Reports indicate the EFI BOOT ROM is Required to Flash the Computer and is a  requirement for a Successful Monterey Installation.

If above is this computer situation >>

Flip out the After Market Drive for the Original Apple Drive and then run the Monterey Installer. Then reverse the process and flip out theApple Drive and put the After Market Drive back in and run the Monetary Installer again.

It may actually install.
