Podcasts won't stop syncing across devices with same id

My wife and I use the same apple id to share photos. The issue is that our podcasts show up on each others phones and when she plays one it updates the minutes played on my phone. From what I've read, this issue should go away if we go to Settings->podcasts and uncheck "Sync library". We have both done this and the issue persists. Any ideas? Thanks!
